Hyperpigmentation (Melasma)

What is melasma?

Melasma, which stems from Greek meaning “a black spot,” is the darkening of skin or hyperpigmentation that occurs in sun-exposed areas, mostly the face. It results from exposure to sunlight or from hormonal changes such as during pregnancy or ingesting oral contraceptive hormones. 90% of patients with melasma are females. The best way to prevent melasma is with the consistent use of sun block or limiting sun-exposure.
